Glenstone Appoints Mia Matthias as Assistant Curator

Tom O’Connor Consulting Group (TOCG) is pleased to announce that Mia Matthias (she/her) has been appointed Assistant Curator by Glenstone Museum (Emily Wei Rales, Director; Nora Severson Cafritz, Senior Director of Collections) in Potomac, Maryland, following our extensive national search led by Jordan Sanford and Tom O’Connor.

Mia Matthias joins Glenstone following her most recent role as Curatorial Assistant at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In collaboration with various curators, Matthias helped produce Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop; Dave McKenzie: The Story I Tell Myself and Disturbing the View; My Barbarian; and this year’s Whitney Biennial: Quiet as It’s Kept. In addition to her editorial and managerial contributions to monographs and catalogues, Matthias has published writings in the Voices in Contemporary Art Journal and Studio Magazine. Prior to the Whitney, Matthias was integral to the execution of Studio Visit: Selected Gifts from Agnes Gund and Constantin Brancusi at MoMA and Harlem Postcards (Leslie Hewitt and Fred Wilson) at Studio Museum during her multi-institutional curatorial fellowship. Matthias brings her well-honed expertise in collaborating with living artists and artists’ estates as well as the highest caliber of historical research and publication production to the team at Glenstone.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mia to the Glenstone team,” said Nora Cafritz. “Her experience speaks for itself. With a myriad of ambitious projects in the pipeline, I am excited to see the multifaceted and creative ways she will contribute to our program.”

“I am delighted to be joining such a talented team at this exciting moment,” said Mia Matthias. “I deeply admire Glenstone’s strong commitment to artists and rigorous programming, and I am looking forward to diving into what promises to be an exceptional line-up of exhibitions and publications.”

“We are so pleased to have aligned Mia Matthias with the wonderful and innovative team at Glenstone,” said Tom O’Connor. “Mia’s expertise in post-war art history and interest in connecting it to artists of today make her an exciting addition for the future of Glenstone and the field at large. We look forward to following the work that Nora and Mia will do together, and to paying regular visits to Glenstone to see the fruits of this work first-hand!”
